(1) Published in 1813, Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice follows the process of an upper class family's search to marry their daughters off before the death of their father. As mentioned in our class lecture, one main theme of this novel is the relationship between class and gender, where becoming an eligible bachelor weighs heavily on his socioeconomic status. Through the narrator's choice of alternating temperate and solemn voices, this novel also shows Austen's views of marriage and its importance. What also becomes clear is how the time period of the novel plays a role in explaining the situation and need for marriage.
(2) Gurinder Chadha's film, titled Bride and Prejudice, inspired by Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice focuses on the differences around an American idea of marriage and weddings and an Indian idea of marriage and weddings. In this film, due to the occasional breakout of song and dance, it can be considered a musical. Some of the main themes in this film are the ways of dealing with the pride of a foreigner and the personal effects of international economic disparities. This film being filmed in three different countries was an excellent way to display and play out the supporting elements of these themes.
(3) The adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice can be considered none other than a reboot. A simple adaptation, I believe, would be the 2005 Pride and Prejudice film directed by Joe Wright. Although there were a few characters with the same names as those in Austen's novel, the international element of this adaptation removes Austen's focus on dealing with gender, and replaces it with an international view and the financial relationship between two nations. This reboot also includes a strong musical aspect. This aspect of the film allows much room for the introduction of Bollywood culture, but I do not believe that it adds to the main themes of the film, or to the main themes of Austen's Pride and Prejudice novel. The musical aspects, I believe, were more so added for enjoyment as opposed to an instance of helping one to better understand Amritsar, India's marriage culture or the concepts of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice novel.
(4) After doing online research on Chadha's Bride and Prejudice, the three sources* that proved to be most relevant and informative were About.com (Hollywood Movies), Common Sense Media, and Cinema Blend. About.com's Hollywood Movie reviews Bride and Prejudice, referring to it as a film that updates Jane Austen's novel and places it in a new environment. Common Sense Media gives a review fit for a family, by giving information a parent would be interested in, but it fails to include information on the critical analysis of the film. Cinema Blend is a movie review and information website also providing images and trailers for viewers' convenience. This source is important because the reviewer is sure to mention the similarities and differences between Jane Austen's novel and Chadha's film. In order to better understand the film, the reviewer gives information about the inspiration (Jane Austen's novel) and which themes were carried over into this now, very modern film.

(5) At one point in the film, Lalita accuses Darcy of wanting to turn India into a theme park. Some might say that Gurinder Chadha turns India into a theme park in her film. Do you agree?
The musical (singing and dancing) aspect in Chadha's Bride and Prejudice is included as an introduction to India's Bollywood culture and cannot be considered similar to the theme park atmosphere Lalita accuses Darcy of wanting. Lalita's accusation of Darcy wanting to turn India into a theme park refers to the foreign American business that has been built in her country. Darcy tries to make the claim that he wants to show Americans the Indian culture, but the upscale American styled hotel Darcy is deciding on is nothing like India and would only be a theme park in India, due to having very little to do with Indian culture. Chadha's inclusion of song and dance in the streets on Amritsar and during wedding ceremonies is a catalyst for showing Bollywood culture and the celebration of a marriage. To those who live in India, some of these songs and dances are ritual and an act of celebration, and cannot be considered as having a theme park like nature. But for those Americans traveling to a five star hotel located in India with only generated bits of Indian culture, they would be entertained and enjoy their time as one visiting a theme park.
